Two domains behind Gist
GitHub Gist hosts snippets and small files. Two domains are involved: gist.github.com serves the interface page, and gist.githubusercontent.com serves the raw file content. Scripts and programs always quote the latter.
Three common uses
- Sharing snippets: post a config, script or example as a Gist and share the link
- Being quoted by projects: blog embeds, documentation references, CI reading public configs
- Lightweight data hosting: version lists and small dictionaries as plain text
Accelerated format
A Gist raw URL looks like gist.githubusercontent.com/<user>/<gist-id>/raw/<file>. Prefix the accelerated domain:
Original: https://gist.githubusercontent.com/user/0f1e2d3c4b/raw/config.json Accelerated: https://ghclone.com/https://gist.githubusercontent.com/user/0f1e2d3c4b/raw/config.json
In multi-file Gists each file has its own raw URL; a /raw URL without a filename points to the first file. Always include the filename when quoting, so reordering files cannot break the reference.
How it differs from Raw files
At the forwarding layer, Gist raw and repository raw are identical — both are read-only acceleration of exact file contents. The difference is management: Gists suit scattered snippets and can be created anonymously, while repositories suit structured projects.
Embedding and quoting tips
Many blog engines support Gist embeds (shortcodes or embed scripts). Those reference the gist.github.com page URL, which can be replaced with the accelerated address as well; if only raw content is quoted, replacing the raw domain is enough.
For teams using Gists as public config, expose the fetch URL as a configuration item: switching to an accelerated address later then requires no code changes. Record the Gist ID in your docs so others can verify the source.
FAQ
- Can anonymous Gists be accelerated? Yes: as long as the content is publicly reachable, the gateway forwards it.
- Secret Gists? Not supported: secret Gists rely on credential fragments in the link, and the gateway strips credential material.
- Stale content after an update? Edge cache lag; wait briefly or append a timestamp query parameter.
